horror sale + progress

Received word last night that Necrotic Tissue will be running a dark flash piece of mine in their October, 2008 issue. Twenty-five bucks plus a Necrotic Tissue T-Shirt for a 1000 word story. Not bad at all. :-) I mentioned a while back that my dark offerings seem to be more favorably received than my light ones and my last few sales seem to be bearing that out.

On the progress front, I've been working on something that I started about 6-8 months ago but didn't feel confident enough to finish. It's going to be a bit on the longish side, I'm afraid, but the depth of characterization required in this one necessitates the extra words, so there's not much I can do about it. Genre-wise, I guess I would call it dark magic-realism.

6467 / 9000 words. 72% done!

Hey congrats on the sale, Kurt!

I too have had the same experience that the darker stuff is better received than the light. Lately I've been leaning like you are but I'm wondering if it's worth it as I'm not having much fun writing the stuff. Or reading it. Don't know, but I'm never scared by this stuff. My new approach is to write something so sick and wicked that only I'll find it funny, if that makes sense. ;)

Thanks, Marshall. If you're not having fun writing it, I say don't bother. I'm actually finding it rather enjoyable, but I think that's because I'm trying new things with each different horror piece I write. Fun with experimentation. And I agree with you totally; the stuff never scares me either, although there was this one quietly creepy piece I read about a year or so ago called "Fruiting Bodies." Brian Lumley wrote it back in the late 80's and it ended up winning a British Fantasy Award. It really stuck with me.

Hey, no, this is excellent! And good luck with your new project. Is it just me, or are your works gradually getting longer? I was wondering what is the longest work you've ever finished?

Thanks, Kara. You're right, my works are actually getting a bit longer, but it's kind of hard to tell by what I've had published since most of my shorter pieces tend to sell to online markets while my longer stuff hits print. My sweet spot is still in the 3000-3500 range, but my longest finished story came in at 13,000 words, and my second longest at just under 10,000.
