resolutions + story now live

Jan. 1st, 2008 | 05:45 pm

Ten writing-related things I resolve to do in 2008:

1-Finish my YA novel. I'm currently 8000 words into a second draft. The first draft was never actually completed in its entirety, but the 35000 words I wrote on it gave me a fairly clear idea of where I wanted to go and how I wanted to get there, so I went ahead and  started over. I haven't worked on it  for over a month now, but I read through it this afternoon  and plan on making it my top priority. I imagine I'll still take pauses to write short stories along the way, but come hell or high water, this book will be finished and winging its way to potential agents before the year is through.

2-Subscribe to four magazines I haven't yet subscribed to. I've decided to let a few of my recent/current subscriptions lapse in order to sample new material. I'd like to stay up to date on them all but, realistically, I have neither the time nor the disposable income to do so.

3-Write and submit at least 12 new short stories. And to go with this one: create a 2008 new stories folder so that I can actually keep track of what I've written (thanks for the idea, Kara!).

4-Keep current submissions in circulation.

5-Make more of an effort towards reprint sales. And to that end, research the foreign language markets as best I can without actually learning foreign languages. :-)

6-Attend one convention. Whatever one it turns out to be will be my first, and to be totally honest, I'm very intimidated at the thought of it. Anybody out there planning on going to WFC in Calgary, by chance?

7-Research the YA market more thoroughly. For someone who is writing with an eye towards a young adult readership, I most definitely do not sample enough of what's currently hot. If you have any book suggestions, feel free to drop titles in the comments section.

8-Read at least five new books pertaining to the craft of writing. Again, if you have suggestions, throw them out there.

9-Keep a running tally of all the novels and short stories I read over the course of the next twelve months so that I'm able to compile a favorites list come this time next year.

10-Last but not least, stay positive. It's just too damn easy to get into a funk and become less productive because of it.

And to ring in the New Year, the January-March issue of The Lorelei Signal, featuring my story "Graffiti Magic" is now live! This one was a reprint sale; the story originally appeared in the February/March 2006 issue of Alien Skin. Go check it out!
